Walk through a Mega Colon at TOPS Surgical Specialty Hospital

March 8, 2021 (HOUSTON) – March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, and TOPS Surgical Specialty Hospital (TOPS Hospital) is bringing out a 10-foot-tall, 20-foot-long, inflatable large intestine to emphasize the importance of screenings.

The Mega Colon will be on display in front of TOPS Hospital located at 17080 Red Oak Dr., Houston, TX 77090 from March 8 through March 10. Hand sanitizing stations will be setup and hospital staff encourage social distancing and wearing masks.

Colon cancer is 90 percent treatable when caught early, however, many people avoid colonoscopies.

“We want our community to first understand the colon,” says Grant Magness. CEO at TOPS. “And the importance of screenings like colonoscopies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Regular screening, beginning at age 50, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum).”

The walk-through educational exhibit was created to inform communities about the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer as well as the other diseases of the colon. This fun and interesting multimedia experience provides important health information, helping to encourage colorectal cancer primary prevention and screening.

As visitors walk through the three-dimensional interior, they will view everything on a large scale, such as polyps, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and different stages of colorectal cancer.
