How to Relieve Knee Pain in Your 40s and 50s

According to research, approximately 25% of people across the globe suffer from knee pain. As one of the most critical types of joint pain, knee pain can affect a person’s mobility, flexibility, comfort, well-being, and peace of mind.

If you’re in your 40s or 50s, you’re at a greater risk of developing knee pain. This blog will offer a closer look at three ways to relieve knee discomfort.

1. Use Heat and Ice

Heat and ice can help reduce knee pain and inflammation. If you suddenly experience a sharp pain in your knee, put an ice pack on it immediately. Wrap it with a thin towel to absorb moisture and to make the ice pack more comfortable against your skin. Ice therapy is extremely safe and effective when done right.

Press the ice pack against your knee for approximately five minutes. Remove it, take a break, and repeat. Make sure it’s not too cold. You should feel coldness but not to the point that it’s uncomfortable.

Alternatively, try heat therapy. Apply a tightly sealed and secured hot water bottle or a heating pad to your knee. Keep it there for five minutes, then remove it. Repeat a couple of times. You’ll feel significant relief.

2. Get Some Rest

If you’re in your 40s or 50s, there’s a chance that you may have overdone it. Take a break. Go easy on routine chores that apply strain on the delicate structures of your knees. Two to three days of rest can bring a lot of comfort.

3. Consult an Orthopedic Doctor

While rest helps in some cases, it may not help in others. People over the age of 40 don’t have as healthy of a musculoskeletal structure as they once did. The aging process weakens these structures, making them less mobile and flexible.

It’s possible that you may have developed a knee condition. Consulting an orthopedic doctor is a great way to address the root cause of the pain. They can diagnose and provide various treatments that can literally get you back on your feet again.

Those treatments may be rest, medication, physical therapy, surgery, or a combination of these. Your orthopedic specialist can access the latest in imaging technology to accurately diagnose the condition and determine the best course of treatment for you.
